Applications for the Pfizer Neuroscience Research Grants close on April 14. The grants give medical graduates an opportunity to obtain research funding of up to $55,000. Congratulations to Dr Mel Michel Villaluz from the Philippines who has been awarded the 2010 ESA Janssen-Cilag Asian-Oceanian Epilepsy Scholarship. Dr Villaluz will be spending 12 months with Prof Ingrid Scheffer and her team at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne, to learn clinical, EEG, imaging, genetics and treatment aspects of paediatric epilepsy.

The conveners of the Parliamentary Friends of Epilepsy have announced an inquiry into the impact of Epilepsy in Australia, so that Senators and Members of Parliament can develop an understanding of the disorder and develop strategies to work with people and organisations to assist individuals and their families.

Registrations are open for the Epilepsy: Top of Mind symposium to be held in Perth on 1 November 2009. The symposium is a joint collaboration between Epilepsy Action Australia and Epilepsy Association of Western Australia and held in conjunction with the Joint Epilepsy Council of Australia.

The symposium offers access to current information on new medications, current and future treatment options, sleep, intractable epilepsies, equality in the workplace and more. The format for the day will be a morning and afternoon plenary session as well as specialised streams for parents, adults living with epilepsy, and families affected by tuberous sclerosis complex with help from the Australasian Tuberous Sclerosis Society.

The ILAE seeks comments from chapters on the proposed revision of the system for classification and terminology of seizures and epilepsies. You can downlad the explanatory letter from the ILAE here [PDF 14KB], and a copy of the Commission report here [PDF 89KB]. Please send comments to the ESA secretariat and these will be collated and forwarded to the ILAE.

The ESA is pleased to confirm that Janssen-Cilag will again sponsor the Asian-Oceanian Fellowship in Clinical Epileptology in 2010.  The Fellowship provides a $50,000 stipend for the successful applicant from Asia or Oceania who wishes to train in epilepsy for 12 months at a centre in Australia.  Application details, including the requirements for English proficiency and medical competency, at on the ESA website under Scholarships & Awards > Janssen-Cilag Asian-Oceanian Fellowship. ESA members who receive enquiries from Asian physicians about epilepsy training in Australia, particularly if they are from persons with whom there has been some personal contact, should direct the physician to consider applying for this Fellowship. The application deadline has been extended to October 16.

The ESA is pleased to announce that Dr Tyson Ware, a paediatric neurology trainee from Tasmania, is the recipient of the 2010 UCB-ESA Clinical Scholarship.  Tyson will undertake a paediatric epilepsy fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, epilepsy being an important aspect of paediatric neurology training.  Tyson ultimately plans to return to work in Hobart, as Tasmania’s first resident paediatric neurologist.  Congratulations to Tyson and many thanks to UCB Pharma for their continued support of this valued training initiative.
