Congratulations to Prof Ingrid Scheffer who received the American Epilepsy Society Research Recognition Award for Clinical Science. This award is given annually to active clinicians working in all aspects of epilepsy research, and is designed to recognise professional excellence reflected in a distinguished history of research or important promise for the improved understanding, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. Prof Scheffer's epilepsy research program has explored many areas of epileptology with a particular focus on the genetics of the epilepsies, epilepsy syndrome classification, and electroclinical semiology of seizures. She is also actively involved in training young clinician researchers and makes extensive contributions to both Australian and international non-medical epilepsy organisations.

Four paediatric neurology trainees and neurologists recently attended a one-week course in paediatric epilepsy, as part of the annual J Kiffin Penry Program, held in North Carolina. They were (L-R above) Simon Williams (Perth), Michael Fahey (Melbourne), Jay Srinivasan (Melbourne) and Stephen Malone (Brisbane). Their attendance was generously supported by UCB Pharma and organised by Gina Drake. By all accounts, the program was an excellent educational opportunity for the four attendees, thanks to UCB.

The deadline to apply for CURE’s 2008 funding cycle is Monday, September 17, 2007. CURE encourages studies that may not be currently fundable by other agencies, such as the NIH, because of their preliminary or unconventional nature. Preference is given to research addressing the more severe and refractory syndromes of epilepsy.  CURE is accepting expressions of interest LOIs in three categories:

2008 CURE Quest Award
1-year award up to $50,000
This program seeks novel research projects that will address the goals of “no seizures, no side effects,” and awards seed grants to researchers submitting innovative proposals that will provide new directions for epilepsy therapy, prevention and, ultimately, a cure. The award is open to both early career and established investigators.

2008 Christopher Donalty and Kyle Coggins Interdisciplinary Research Award
A 1-year award up to $100,000
This program awards a joint seed grant in support of collaborative, interdisciplinary research undertaken by at least two investigators (including early career investigators). One investigator must specialize in epilepsy and one investigator from outside the epilepsy field who is looking to extend their work into epilepsy research. Successful applicants are anticipated to pursue work that could not ordinarily be pursued by either of the investigators without collaborative effort.

2008 CURE Challenge Award

Multiple-year award, up to $250,000
This award will be presented to an established investigator exploring cutting-edge approaches to curing epilepsy. Preference will be given to research addressing the more severe and refractory syndromes of epilepsy.

Visit the CURE website, for information on funding eligibility, deadlines, and submission guidelines.

Stephen Davis (ANZAN President), Simon Harvey (ESA President) and Ernie Somerville (Chair of Driving Committee) met with the key representatives of the National Transport Commission at the end of June regarding certification of Fitness to Drive (FTD). The NTC understands the ANZAN/ESA position and is keen to devise an improved and safer system of certification of FTD. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that driver licensing is a state responsibility and the NTC has limited power to influence the states.

A meeting of national and state transport ministers and driving authorities is scheduled for September and the NTC has agreed to support the certification principles laid out by the ESA and ANZAN. In the meantime, ESA members are advised to refrain from certifying FTD of epilepsy patients (except where FTD or otherwise is beyond doubt and the patient is co-operative), and instead, strike through the fit/unfit tick boxes and (with the patient's permission) forward the form and a letter to the driver licensing authority containing the information necessary for the authority or its medical advisers to make a decision.

In other driving related news, the WA Assistant Coroner has recommended that drivers with medical conditions potentially affecting FTD should be legally required to report their condition to the licensing authority.

Conversely, the Queensland Government is still exploring mandatory reporting of unfit drivers by doctors, as still happens in SA, despite years of attempted persuasion. Members are reminded to advise (and document their advice) patients with epilepsy of the risks that seizures and medications pose to driving, as well as the responsibilities that they have with respect to ceasing driving and reporting to the authorities if seizures occur while they hold a licence.

At the ILAE General Assembly, the Prof Li Shichuo from China proposed that the ILAE and IBE adopt an International Epilepsy Care Day.  China held such an event this year on June 28th, a day that is apparently not taken by another health issue.  China is seeking support from chapters for this day to be claimed by the ILAE-IBE.  If you have any comments on the proposal, especially concerns, please send them to the ESA Secretariat; otherwise, the ESA will simply support the proposal.

During the recent meeting of the ILAE Commission on Asian and Oceanian Affairs, there was discussion again about the lack of epilepsy development in several countries in our region, most notably Papua & New Guinea, and Fiji and the other Pacific Islands. The ESA could potentially take a role in fostering epilepsy development in PNG, and perhaps the NZ Chapter could take a similar role with Fiji.  One mechanism might be to invite key people to join our Societies and attend our Annual Scientific Meeting.  If you have physician, paediatrician or other health professional contacts in PNG or the Pacific Islands, please send their details to the ESA Secretariat.

July 20, 2007

The decision on the country for the 8th AOEC in 2010 was deferred, pending a meeting of the chairs of the ILAE and IBE Regional Commissions.  The choice is currently between Australia and the Philippines, the Philippines possibly being favourite as they have been the “back up” country for the Kuala Lumpur and Xiamen AOECs.  A decision will hopefully be made in the next month.

July 20, 2007

Congratulations to our New Zealand colleagues whose national chapter was accepted into the ILAE on July 11th.  The office bearers are Peter Bergin (President), Lynette Sadleir (Vice-President), Liz Walker (Secretary General) and Claire Spooner (Treasurer) and their chapter has more than 20 members presently.  A joint meeting of the ESA and NZ-ILAE Executives Committees was held in Singapore last week, at which time both parties agreed to arrangements that would see our two societies continuing to work together and enjoying reciprocal benefits.  This will be discussed further at the ESA AGM later in the year.

July 20, 2007

A successful IEC was held in Singapore last week, at which several ESA members discussed key issues in plenary and parallel sessions, presented scientific material in poster and platform sessions, and participated in ILAE business, commission and teaching activities.

Congratulations to Dr Radwa Badawy from the Austin Hospital who received a Young Investigator’s Award for her presentation on the effect of AEDs on cortical hyperexcitability as measured with TMS.

The next IEC is in Budapest, Hungary 2009 and will celebrate the centenary of the ILAE.
